Through the prism of a beauty pageant staged by female inmates of a Siberian prison camp emerges a complex narrative of the lives of the first generation of women to come of age in Post-Soviet Russia.
I was inspired to create Miss GULAG because of a friendship I developed with a young man who was on parole in the U.S. at the time. I was fascinated by the mixed reaction stirred when reflecting on his early life and limited life choices, his tolerance for high risk and uncertainty. The incarcerated women I chose to portray all shared this same insatiable desire to live and to overcome impossible conditions.
